Join us in completing one of New Zealand’s ten Great Walks – not by walking, but by paddling through the Whanganui River for three days, covering more than 100 kilometers of stunning natural beauty. This unique journey gained Great Walk status for its significant Maori history and it’s the only Great Walk where you can stay in a Marae (a traditional meeting ground and focal point for Maori communities).

A $100 deposit is required to reserve your space.

Deposit is 100% refundable in the event COVID-19 restrictions prevent you from traveling to the starting point.

Day 1

Meet at our lodge in Taumarunui in the evening.

Day 2
Whakahoro to John Coull Hut

Ride on a shuttle to the entrance to the river. Paddle 6 to 8 hours / 35 km.

Day 3
John Coull Hut to Tīeke Kāinga

Paddle 7 to 9 hours / 29 km. Optional detour to visit the Bridge to Nowhere.

Day 4
Tīeke Kāinga to Pipiriki

Paddle 4 to 6 hours / 21.5 km to the ending point.

Important Information

  • To participate in the Whanganui River journey safely you should: be a confident swimmer, have experience in a canoe, be fit enough to paddle for 6 to 7 hours in a day, and be over the age of 10.
